The Market holds an important place in the heart of Norwich citizens. Recorded in the Domesday Book, Norwich Provisions Market
has traded on this city centre site since the 11th century making it one of England’s oldest continuing markets. Over the
years it acquired iconic status characterised by its multi coloured tilts. However, at the time of the proposed revamp
it was not only a tourist attraction but also a local market which formed an important part of the cityscape providing
an income for its traders. This latter point was exceptionally important as any scheme needed to ensure the market did
not close during the renovations otherwise stallholders would lose their livings and may not return.
Thus the challenge was to create a new design which not only met current trading laws but also the needs of the traders
whilst retaining the tradition & vibrancy of an historic market.
Unfortunately all did not run smoothly………
