The Challenge
The Market holds an important place in the heart of Norwich citizens. Recorded in the Domesday Book, Norwich Provisions Market has traded on this city centre site since the 11th century making it one of England’s oldest continuing markets. Over the years it acquired iconic status characterised by its multi coloured tilts. However, at the time of the proposed revamp it was not only a tourist attraction but also a local market which formed an important part of the cityscape providing an income for its traders. This latter point was exceptionally important as any scheme needed to ensure the market did not close during the renovations otherwise stallholders would lose their livings   and may not return.

Thus the challenge was to create a new design which not only met current trading laws but also the needs of the traders whilst retaining the tradition & vibrancy of an historic market.
Unfortunately all did not run smoothly………
