St Lawrence has no stone mural monuments, which for a church of this size is highly unusual, although there are many floor monuments, including several fifteenth-century brasses (now in store). This may indicate that, while there were many wealthy inhabitants in the Middle Ages, this was not so by the seventeenth century, when such monuments start to be erected in other churches. The floor monuments indicate a certain level of wealth, but mural monuments are much more costly.
The sole exception, Sarah Glover's brass tablet, was placed there by subscription; such tablets cost far less than stone monuments. To learn about Sarah click here
